Kids just want to make Pottery, and this 5 Class Series with Jean Skipper is a great place for them to start! The memories and the hand build pottery pieces that they create are sure to be as unique as they are!
School Aged Children are invited to join Jean for 5 Sessions of Hand Built Pottery Making.
The skills taught in each session will build on each other. Below you'll find a description for each of the 5 Sessions. Each class will be held between 3:30 and 5:00, according to the schedule that follows, and this will allow for projects to dry and be kiln-fired between sessions.
Class Dates: 3/19, 4/2, 4/16, 5/7, and 5/21
Class Outline:
- On March 19th, we'll begin with an introduction and tour of the ARTworks Vass Pottery Studio, with an emphasis on materials, best practices for safety, and the keys to success in pottery making. Guests will glaze 2 pinch pots, that Jean created for them. They'll learn about the safe operation of our slab roller and will practice handling and texturing clay. Each Child will then roll 2 small slabs that they'll texture and form into trinket dishes.
- On April 2nd, pinch pots will be fired and ready for their debut. Guests will glaze their fired trinket dishes using brushable glazes. Children will learn the process for attaching two or more pieces of clay together, and will create a tripod cylinder from a slab of clay, using a template or pattern.
- On April 16th, trinket dishes will be fired and ready for their debut. Tripod cylinders will be glazed using dippable glazes. Children will learn the process for making Jean's Signature Critters and Creatures from a pinch pot form, and they'll create their own using a combination of the skills that they've learned so far.
- On May 7th, tripod cylinders will be fired and ready for their debut. Critters and Creatures will be glazed using brushable glazes. Jean will then demonstrate her signature process for making miniature houses using a slab construction, and Children will create their own miniature houses.
- On May 21st, fired Critters and Creatures will make their debut. Miniature houses will be glazed using dippable glazes, and they'll be ready for pickup within 2 weeks of class. Guests will create a textured plate, platter, or bowl in the shape of their choice. They'll also select a color of dippable glaze for this final piece, and Jean will glaze it for them after the pottery pieces are fired for the first time. This final project will be ready for pickup within 4 weeks of the end of class.
The all inclusive price for this class is $179 per child.
We define "School Aged Children" as those who are able to follow our instructions, and those who can comfortably work relatively independently in our classroom, during Jean's 90 minute class sessions. If you feel that your Children may have an easier time with you creating beside them as a registered student in class, please register with them. If you have any doubt as to whether this class would be a good fit for your Children or you, please call Jean at the gallery before registering at 910-245-4129.
Please note that your Children's safety is more important to us than any amount of money, and this is reflected in the seriousness with which we take pottery studio cleanliness and safety. This will be emphasized repeatedly during classes.
Many of the risks involved in making pottery can be minimized by establishing a clean studio practice, and we'll focus on this at every step of our process. As a result, cleaning will be a part of each student's studio session.
Pottery making tools can be sharp or hot, and the equipment that we use can inflict serious bodily harm if not used purposefully and safely. In-depth training and verbal instruction about this will be provided before Children are permitted to use these items themselves.
For the safety of all involved, we have a zero-tolerance policy for Guests who break our safety rules. While we don't anticipate challenges during this class, we want you to be aware that Children who break these rules will immediately be asked to stop participating in the class session that they're attending. Depending on the severity of what they've done, they may also be banned from attending future classes in this series.
